چکیده

The Sun is the late-type star we can study with the highest level of detail. In the interpretation of stellar data, therefore, it is often assumed that the physical processes of the coronae of late-type stars are similar to those of the solar corona, i.e. the “solar-stellar analogy”. In order to investigate the validity of this assumption, we have started a program to study systematically the Sun as an X-ray star. Our program aims to explore how far the solar model can be applied to other stars. In this paper we review the results obtained from these studies and, in particular, we discuss the variability of a star identical to the Sun during its cycle, the contribution of different coronal regions to the whole corona X-ray spectrum, and the role of flares. We find that the non-flaring Sun during its cycle fits well in the stellar scenario as a low-activity star. Our results suggest that the coronae of stars from low to intermediate activity may be explained as the effect of structures similar to those present on the Sun, changing the relative weight of the different kinds of nonflaring coronal regions; the coronae of very active stars may be explained if a continuous flaring activity characterizes these stars. Possible implications in stellar data interpretation are discussed.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

ar X iv : a st ro - p h / 99 09 04 0 v 1 2 S ep 1 99 9 – 1 – Continuous heating of a giant X - ray flare on Algol

Giant flares can release large amounts of energy within a few days 1−7 : X-ray emission alone can be up to ten percent of the star's bolometric luminosity. These flares exceed the luminosities of the largest solar flares by many orders of magnitude, which suggests that the underlying physical mechanisms supplying the energy are different from those on the Sun. Magnetic coupling between the comp...

High-amplitude, long-term X-ray variability in the solar-type star HD 81809: the beginning of an X-ray activity cycle?

We present the initial results from our XMM-Newton program aimed at searching for X-ray activity cycles in solar-type stars. HD 81809 is a G2-type star (somewhat more evolved than the Sun, and with a less massive companion) with a pronounced 8.2 yr chromospheric cycle, as evident from from the Mt. Wilson program data. We present here the results from the initial 2.5 years of XMM-Newton observat...

Timing and Spectroscopy of Accreting X-ray Pulsars: the State of Cyclotron Line Studies

A great deal of emphasis on timing in the RXTE era has been on pushing toward higher and higher frequency phenomena, particularly kHz QPOs. However, the large areas of the RXTE pointed instruments provide another capability which is key for the understanding of accreting X-ray pulsars – the ability to accumulate high quality spectra in a limited observing time. For the accreting X-ray pulsars, ...

The Sun as an X-ray Star: Active Region Evolution, Rotational Modulation, and Implications for Stellar X-ray Variability

We study the contribution of an active region and its core to the luminosity and the spectrum of the Sun in the X-ray band and to the relevant solar emission measure vs. temperature distribution, EM(T ). We also study the relevant changes in the course of four solar rotations, and the solar rotational modulation due to this active region, the only one present at that time. To this end, we have ...
